W.A. Mozart: The Magic Flute (Szeged National Theatre)
Place: Szeged, Szeged National TheatreWolfgang Amadeus Mozart: The Magic Flute
opera in two acts, in Hungarian
The libretto by Zsófia Kukk and Márk Tárnoki, based on a translation by Zsolt Harsányi.
The libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The unarmed, fleeing Prince Tamino falls before his pursuer, the dragon, but at the moment of his downfall he becomes the chosen one: the Queen of the Night sees in him the future saviour of her captive daughter, Pamina. She is given wonderful instruments - but can she play them? He also gets a helping hand - but can he rely on it? To succeed in his mission, he must fulfil his own potential, surpassing himself. But through many dangers, through fire and water, he may achieve the double reward of a loving companion and a wealth of knowledge and spirit. By the time she gets there, she may also find out whether, for the tormented mother, her child is really the most important thing, and whether the high priest's severity is not rather a protective love.
W.A. Mozart's last opera, E. Based on Schikaneder's text, it is a deeply symbolic, mystical work about the depth and simplicity of love, the trials and joys of life, wise care and destructive attachment, the value of growing up and the beauty of remaining a child. And while the listener is enchanted by the sounds of Mozart, listening, agitating and contemplating all these thoughts, the heroes of the story - the bell and the magical flute - are guided by the power of music, the greatest gift of all.
